Abstract
The study was conducted to find out the academic performance of indigenous pupils in Sumibang indigenous Primary School, SY 2010-2011.
The researchers utilized the descriptive-survey method. Questionnaire and checklist were the instrument used in gathering data and information essential in the study. Frequency counts, percentage, weighted arithmetic mean, and t-test were the statistical tools employed to give interpretation of data.
The profile of Grades I, II and III pupils showed that there were more males than female respondents aged 9 to 10 years old and above 13 years. Most respondents belonged to large families and they worshipped "Diwata"; most parents were elementary level; majority belonged to families with low income; and most of their homes were far from school. The academic performances of the Grade I and II pupils were poor while Grade III was fair based on the first grading grade. The average for grade Grade I was 15 or 93.75, "Poor"; Grade II, 21 or 95.45, "Poor"; Grade III, 5 or 55.56, "Fair". The academic performances of the pupils were always affected by all factors. There was no significant difference between male and female respondents' reading ability.
The school head should organize a reading program to meet the reading needs of the pupils. The teachers are encouraged to conduct feeding program, provide additional reading materials, and put up a vegetable garden. Similar study shall be conducted to determine the academic performance of indigenous pupils in other indigenous shcools.
