Abstract
This study focused on the academic performance of the indigenous pupils in Marangan Elementary School, Marangan, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur. Included in the study were the indigenous pupils in Grade V and Vi. The researchers looked into the profile of the pupil-respondents; their academic performance, and the factors affecting the pupil-respondents' academic performance as perceived by the teachers and the pupils themselves.
This utilized the descriptive-survey method in gathering the data and information needed to accomplish the objective of this study. Questionnaire--checklist was the main instrument used in gathering the needed data vital to this study. To analyze and interpret the gathered data, descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Frequency counts, percentage, Weighted Arithmetic Mean and the t-test were the statistical tools employed to arrive at the correct interpretation of the data.
The results revealed that majority of both Grade V and VI are 10 to 12 years old and were predominantly males. Both their fathers and mothers were in elementary level with a very low monthly income and they don't participate in any of the academic contest.
On the other hand, the academic performance of the Grade V and VI pupil-respondents was poor based on the previous average grades and first grading grades. The academic performance of the pupil-respondents was always affected by the predetermined factors. Furthermore, it was found out that there is no significant relationship between the academic performance of the pupil-respondents and the predetermined factors.
Finally, the study recommends that the school principals encourage the teachers to attend seminars and trainings for personal development and professional growth; that the pupils develop their study habits to improve their academic performance; and that a similar study be conducted with an increased number of variables and a greater number of respondents to determine further the relationship between the factors affecting the academic performance of indigenous pupils in other schools.
