Abstract
This study assessed the nutritional status of the indigenous pupil-respondents of the selected elementary schools of Siayan District, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte during the School Year 2015-2016.
Involved in this study were the 252 indigenous pupils of the selected elementary schools of Siayan District, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, namely: Moyo, Pase, and Tolohon Elementary Schools.
The research design used was the descriptive-survey method using the questionnaire-checklist as the main instrument in gathering the data and information in order to accomplish the purpose of this study. Statistical tools, namely: frequency counts, percentage, and the chi-square were used in the interpretation of the data.
The results of the study revealed that majority of the pupil-respondents were 11-15 years old, dominated by males, whose parents' occupation was farming, had low monthly family income and belonged to big families.
On the other hand, the teacher-respondents agreed fairly that the physical, socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors affect the pupil-respondents' nutritional status which was evidently manifested in the grand mean of 3.67.
Meanwhile, the findings disclosed that a greater majority of the pupil-respondents' nutritional status were normal; and the learning performance of the pupil-respondents was "Fairly Satisfactory" as clearly revealed in their grades ranged from 75-79%.
Furthermore, the pupil-respondents' sex is not associated with their nutritional status; however their monthly family income and number of siblings are associated with their nutritional status. It also confirmed that the pupil-respondents' nutritional status was not associated with their learning performance.
Finally, this study recommends that the DepEd continuously support the "Feeding Program" inorder to reduce if not eradicate the minimal number of wasted and severely waster pupils in schools; that the teachers endeavor to employ better teaching strategies to help improve that pupils' academic performance; that the pupils strive to achieve better academic performance by improving their study habits; and another study be conducted in other districts with an increased number of variables.
