Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the sanitation and hygiene practices among Subanen. It involved 30 Subanen families from each barangay of Upper Landing and Dapiwak, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur, Calendar Year 2017.
This study looked into the profile of respondents in terms of number of children, socio-economic status and educational attainment, sanitation and hygiene practices, health benefits they can gained in hygiene and sanitation practices. It also ascertained if there exist a significant difference between the sanitation and hygiene practices of the two Barangays as well as a significant relationship between the respondents' profile and their sanitation and hygiene practices.
The results of the study revealed that many of the respondents have 5-6 children, most earned 5000-below monthly income and many of them are in elementary level. The hygiene practices of the respondents were washing hands before preparing or eating foods, using bath soap and shampoo when taking a bath, and changing clothes occasionally. On the other hand the sanitation practices were storing chemicals away from the kitchen and food storage, washing dirty clothes with soap and segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable and the health benefits gained in practicing sanitation and hygiene practices were prioritizing the healthy living of the family, having comfortable environment, health safety of everyone, good condition of body & mind and personal grooming of children attending school.
There was a significant difference between the hygiene and sanitation practices of the two groups of the respondents. Based on the data gathered the relationship between the respondent's profile, family income and educational attainment towards sanitation and hygiene practices cannot be determined.
Finally, the study recommends that the LGU, other government officials, and agencies grant more scholarships for Subanen Children for them to earn a degree; that the Barangay officials and health workers closely monitor the sanitation and hygiene practices to boast healthy living in their respective community. And the respondents may continue their good practices in sanitation and hygiene to improve and develop their living and that they may become a model individual to IP community.
