Abstract
This study aimed to identify the healing practices of Subanen tribe in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur. It identified the demographic profile of the respondents, their healing practices, the medicinal plants used, plant part/s used, medicinal use, their preparation and application and the benefits derived from practicing the traditional healing. the respondents were the 24 identified barangays.
It used qualitative-ethnographic method research in order to achieve the objectives set in the study.
The study revealed that the Subanen healing practices fall into two types: faith healing and traditional healing. in addition, lagundi , guava, papaya, mayana, avocado, cogon, makahiya, mango, macopa, and mahogany are used to treat respiratory-related, gastro-intestinal disorders, cuts and wounds and kidney problems. Moreover, the leaves are the most commonly-used part; decoction is the most common way of preparation; and drinking the solution is the most common way of application. Furthermore, traditional healing is beneficial, safe , and economical.
Finally, the study recommends that the LGU Officials encourage the use of modern medical practices along with the traditional ones for better medical service; that the Subanen leaders push through for the education of other Subanen folks; that the Subanen community continue the use of traditional healing practices as there are no negative effects on its use and search for other plants that may be used for medical purposes; that medical practitioners conduct trainings and workshops to Subanen community for health and education; and that other studies be conducted in other areas not covered in this present study.
