Abstract
The researcher conducted this study purposely to determine the cultural practices and beliefs of Subanen in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.
The researchers looked into the cultural practices, and beliefs of Subanen in the Municipality of Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur. This research study utilized descriptive survey and triangulation method. This study was conducted in five barangays comprising Datu-tutukan, Labangon, Macasing, Dulian, and Dapiwak.
The results revealed that hte Subanen tribal people have their own several musical instruments, dances, and ceremonial drinks that are played, performed, and served in special gatherings and significant occasions. They are skilled in making handmade home products. Gukom is the chief leader and highly respected person in the tribal group, while the Suruhano/Balyan has healing powers. Their various ceremonial celebrations and rituals have little differences and were done during significant occasions. They believed in God (Megbabaya), ancestral spirits, folk healers, and supernatural beings. Their unique beliefs still exist up to the present time.
This study recommends that the LGU will continue the advocacy in advancing the Subanen economic system through Social Preparation and Strengthening People's Participation (SPSPP) to liberate them from poverty and hunger, the LGU will document, help preserve and value the culture beliefs of Subanen as one of country's indigenous group of people and other group of people who are not members of the Subanen tribal group will understand and respect their culture and beliefs. A similar study maybe conducted to other Subanen groups in Zamboanga del Sur to determine their uniqueness and differences.
