Abstract
This study was primarily conducted to investigate the relationship of reading habits and reading comprehension.
The respondents of the study were the 499 grades V and VI indigenous pupils and 7 teachers in the selected elementary schools of Siayan District, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, School Year 2015-2016.
Descriptive correlational method was employed in the study with the questionnaire-checklist as the main data gathering instrument. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the statistical analysis of data.
Results revealed that the pupil-respondents belonged to families whose parents were farmers and housekeepers, who were in the elementary level earning a monthly family income below P5,000. Their houses were less than 1 kilometer from school with gas lamp as home lighting facility. Books were the primary home reading materials of the pupil-respondents. All schools were recipients of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) while Australian Aid, Assisi Development Foundation Incorporated (ADFI), UNICEF, Kalahi-CIDDS, and Hope International were availed by only few schools.
Results further disclosed that the pupil-respondents had fair study habits. Moreover, home background, environmental, learner and health factors considerably affect pupils' reading habits while teacher factor does not have considerable influence. The pupil-respondents were in the instructional level of reading comprehension. It was further found out that the pupil-respondents' reading habits were associated with their reading comprehension.
The study recommends that the Department of Education implement school-based reading remediation programs that would serve as avenue for learners to develop their reading habits. Schools, on the other hand, are encouraged to establish strong linkages with government and/or non-government organization. The study further recommends that the teachers employ motivational activities to boost pupils' interest in reading and improve their reading habits. They are also encouraged to provide varied reading activities and use higher order thinking questions to improve pupils' reading comprehension. Pupils, on the other hand, are challenged to develop their reading habits. Finally, future researchers are encouraged to conduct relevant studies that would explore on the reading habits of high school students.
