Abstract
This study purported to determine the challenges met by the non-IP teachers teaching Subanen pupils in selected Schools of Dumingag for the School Year 2018-2019. Descriptive study method was employed in the study with the questionnaire-checklist as the main instrument in gathering the data.
The challenges met by the non-IP teachers teaching Subanen pupils were language barrier, cultural diversity and behavior of the learners. The teaching techniques implemented by the teachers in handling Subanen pupils were allow students to be actively involved in classroom activities; explain the lesson well, promote pupils' involvement in open discussion to sustain their interest; and actively participate in the teaching-learning process by deliberately drilling the class in achieving the desired behavior were the most prevalent strategies applied by the non-IP teachers in handling Subanen pupils.
The suggested solutions to the challenges were make the learners collaborative with each other so that they can connect the lessons learned in mother tongue and those in other languages; actively confront instances of stereotyping, bias and discrimination when it occurs; and cheer up the pupils so that they'll sustain interest in the lessons and activity must be observed in handling Subanen pupils.
The academic performances of the pupils were Satisfactory. There was no significant correlation between the challenges met by the non-IP teachers teaching Subanen pupils and the academic performance of the pupils. There was no significant correlation between the teachers teaching techniques employed and the pupil's academic performance.
Finally, this study recommends that: The DepEd which is the implementer of the kto12 program with the help of the LGU provides adequate materials needed for the Subanen pupils, and that the teachers may endeavour to strengthen their knowledge about the language, culture, and attitudes of the pupils to avoid misunderstanding. Furthermore, that they should be aware of the strength and weaknesses of the Subanen pupils to cater their needs. That the non-IP teacher apply more varied teaching techniques in order to cater the needs of the Subanen learners.
