Abstract
This study focused on determining the study habits and academic performance of the indigenous students in selected secondary schools of Dumingag, School Year 2012-2013. It dealt with the following areas of concern: profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex and parents' educational attainment; study habits of the respondents; academic performance of the respondents; factors affecting the academic performance of the respondents; and the significance of the relationship between the study habits and academic performance of the respondents.
The statistical techniques employed in the study were frequency counts, percentage and the Weighted Average Mean. This study used the self-modified questionnaire-checklist as the main instrument in identifying the study habits and the factors affecting the study habits and academic performance of the respondents.
The findings revealed that many of the indigenous students were females, 15-17 years old. Majority of the parents were in the elementary level. The indigenous students had good study habits while many of them had fair academic performance.
The academic performance of the respondents was sometimes affected by the intellectual, environmental, teacher and economic factors. Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between the study habits and academic performance of the indigenous students.
This study recommended that the principals send their teachers to seminars and trainings on teaching indigenous students to improve their teaching capabilities; that the teachers and parents have a concerted effort in improving the students' study habits and their academic performance; that the students study hard to improve their academic performance; and that the students participate in various school activities to develop self-confidence.
