Abstract
This study determined the self-perceived factors in pursuing higher education and the problems encountered when completing such education by Indigenous Peoples Students in a Municipality of Zamboanga del Sur. The participants of this study were the 17 BEED, 6 BSED, 30 BSCrim, 29 BSIT and 26 BSA Indigenous Peoples students of J.H. Cerilles State College-Dumingag Campus. The research design used was the descriptive survey method which enabled to arrive at the answer to the problem presented. The chief instrument used was the questionnaire-checklist which was adapted from the research instrument of Regaspi (2017). To arrive at the correct interpretation of the data gathered descriptive statistics was used.
Results showed that majority of the participants' pursuit to higher education were highly influenced by factors such as personal, consanguinity, peers and social aspirations while technical support factors were often the problems encountered by Indigenous Peoples students which was perceived to hinder their pursuit to higher education.
The study recommends that the NCIP, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Local Government Unit (LGU) and other government agencies may coordinate and give budgetary priority to additional programs that would boost the free internet connection even in far flung areas and they may continue to expand access to quality higher education by providing additional educational gadgets such as tablet, android phone and laptops to students belonging to IPs; and conduct career orientation to IPs to widen their perspectives on the importance of getting higher education; and that further studies may be conducted on the lived experiences of IP students pursing higher education.
